The US Department of Energy (DoE) approved Critical Decision-0 (“Approve Mission Need”) for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) on December 19, 2019. Soon after, on January 9th, DoE announced the selection of Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY, as the site for EIC construction. Jefferson Lab in Newport News, Virginia, is expected to be a major partner in the project and make significant contributions.
These crucial decisions officially mark the beginning of the EIC project and enable R&D work to begin.
“This facility will deepen our understanding of nature and is expected to be the source of insights ultimately leading to new technology and innovation.” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette.
Our research group is deeply involved in this project, which will open up a new frontier in nuclear physics and offer us new, exciting opportunities!
